Top story of today

1. Jakarta, Indonesia.  

In our today's top story the first story belongs to Indonesia’s military and they said it was searching for a submarine with 53-crew aboard after losing contact with the vessel during naval exercises off the coast of Bali.

The German-built KRI Nanggala 402 was scheduled to do live torpedo exercises when it asked for permission to dive authorities said. “After permission was given according to the procedure, the submarine lost contact and could not be reached,” the defense ministry said.

2. Islamabad.

The second today’s top story is from the Supreme Court of Pakistan, Islamabad where Justice Qazi Faez Isa has said that heads of the country’s top revenue collection the agency was removed for not succumbing to pressure over a case against his wife Sarina Isa in connection with her offshore properties.

In a reply submitted to the 10-judge bench of the Supreme Court hearing a set of review petitions, Justice Isa recalls that on June 19, 2020, the Supreme Court directed the Federal Board of Revenue’s (FBR) chairman to submit a report to the secretary of the Supreme Judicial Council (SJC) on the off-shore properties.

He says “immediately after the order was announced Ms. Nausheen Javaid Amjad was removed from the position of chairperson FBR to which she had been appointed less than four months earlier” in violation of the law and directives of the Supreme Court in Anita Turab case.

Moreover, the government decided to run the FBR through makeshift arrangements by giving an additional charge of FBR chairman to Mohammad Javed Ghani, Justice Isa says. “Sadly this important position was subjugated for petty self-interest and the institution of FBR destroyed.”

3. Bomb Explosion in Quetta.

Our third today’s top story belongs to Quetta where a powerful bomb exploded in the parking lot of the Serena Hotel in Quetta night, killing at least four people and wounding 12 others, officials said.

DIG Azhar Ikram said that the explosive device was apparently fitted in a vehicle, according to initial investigations. He added that a police official was among the deceased.

Security, fire and rescue officials were rushing to the hotel and no one was being allowed to go near the site of the blast,

4. Gilgit.

The fourth Today’s top story is from Gilgit Baltistan. The Gilgit-Baltistan Chief Court directed the government and the election Commission to hold local body elections in the region immediately.

5. Peshawar.

The fifth and the last Today’s top story is from Peshawar. An anti-terrorism court granted bail to 104 suspected members of the recently-banned Tehreek-i-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) on the charges of conspiring against the state and inciting people to riots.

1. US President:

US President Joe Biden and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping held their first telephone call as leaders and appeared at odds on most issues, even as Xi warned that confrontation would be a “disaster” for both nations.

While Xi has called for “win-win” cooperation, Biden has called China America’s “most serious competitor” and vowed to “out compete” Beijing.

 2. PARIS:

Russia and France urged Iran to show restraint after it started producing uranium metal in a new breach of limits laid out in Tehran’s nuclear deal with world powers.

The UN’s nuclear watchdog in Vienna reported that Iran has started producing uranium metal in defiance of a 2015 deal with world powers on which ex-US president Donald Trump sensationally reneged in 2018.

At least for soldiers were martyred on Friday when terrorists attacked a security forces post on Friday in the South Waziristan district, said the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR).

Troops responded promptly to the attack and killed four of the attackers during the raid in the Makeen area of the district.

4. KARACHI:

An anti-terrorism court directed the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) to refund (unfreeze) the ‘unclaimed’ money deposited in a private bank by slain Afghan Taliban leader Mullah Akhtar Mansour in order to start the process of transferring the funds to the government treasury.

5. ISLAMABAD:

The government is aiming to achieve herd immunity by vaccinating 70 million people against Covid-19 by the end of the current year. About 30 million people will be vaccinated by September.

 6. ISLAMABAD:

The International Development Committee (IDC) has relaunched an inquiry into the effectiveness of UK Aid to Pakistan.

According to the terms of reference of the inquiry, the committee has invited written submissions on the effectiveness of UK Aid to Pakistan. In particular, the inquiry will ascertain whether the UK’s strategic aims for its Pakistan aid programme are clear and appropriate and UK-Pakistan relationship coherent and well-coordinated with the aid programme and its aims and objectives.

1. WASHINGTON:

The Biden administration would like to rebuild America’s relationship with Pakistan and make it more productive than it has been during the recent past, says a senior US scholar.

At a recent briefing on the new US administration’s foreign policies, James M. Lindsay, a senior vice president at the Council for Foreign Relations, also predicted a better understanding between the White House and the Pentagon on the deployment of American troops in Afghanistan.

2. QUETTA:

Pakistan has completed 182km of the 213km-long fence at the Afghan border and work on the remaining 31km fence is expected to complete till April, a senior official told the meeting of civil and military officials

The meeting, which was presided over by Balochistan Home Minister Ziaullah Langove, discussed the ongoing border-fencing project, land settlement due to border fencing between the two countries and the overall law and order situation.

3. KARACHI:

Pakistan International Airlines claimed  that it had paid compensation to the families of 20 victims at Rs10 million per deceased person, and said it was still waiting for succession certificates from 77 families to complete the process and bring the chapter to a close.

4. ISLAMABAD:

The Islamabad High Court (IHC) issued contempt of court notices to 17 lawyers including Islamabad Bar Council member Naseer Kayani and candidates vying for top position of the Islamabad High Court Bar Association (IHCBA) election scheduled to be held on Feb 27.

5.YANGON:

Myanmar’s military raided the Yangon headquarters of ousted leader Aung San Suu Kyi’s party, officials said, as the United States joined the UN in “strongly” condemning violence against protesters demanding a return to democracy.

6. BANGKOK:

A Thai court denied bail to four prominent democracy activists after they were indicted for violating the kingdom’s royal defamation law — the first formal charges laid against the leaders of a movement calling for reforms to the monarchy.

Demonstrations in Bangkok last year against the government of former army chief Premier Prayut Chan-O-Cha drew tens of thousands at their peak, with many calling for changes to the country’s once unassailable royal family.

 7. KARACHI:

The administrative judge of the antiterrorism courts remanded five foreigners held for allegedly working for the Afghan and Indian intelligence agencies in police custody.

The Counter-Terrorism Department on Monday claimed to have foiled a major terrorist activity in the metropolis by arresting five Afghan nationals for having links with Afghanistan’s National Directorate of Security (NDS) and India’s Research and Analysis Wing (RAW).

1. BANGKOK:

United Nations human rights experts spoke out against Thailand’s increasing use of a law forbidding criticism of its royal family, singling out a 43-year sentence for an elderly woman convicted under the law

2. TAPOVAN:

Twenty-six people were confirmed dead on Monday and more than 170 others were missing after a devastating flash flood in India thought to have been caused by a chunk of glacier breaking off.

The resulting wall of water and debris barrelled down a tight valley in India’s Himalayan north on Sunday morning, destroying bridges, roads and hitting two hydroelectric power plants.

3. JERUSALEM:

Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu denied corruption charges during a brief court appearance  as his graft trial resumed weeks ahead of a fourth national election within two years.

Netanyahu, the first Israeli premier to be indicted in office, was formally charged last year over allegations of accepting improper gifts and seeking to trade regulatory favour with media moguls in exchange for positive coverage.

4. WASHINGTON:

Donald Trump’s legal team argued on the eve of his impeachment trial that the case is constitutionally flawed and it was “absurd” to hold the former president responsible for the US Capitol riot. The House of Representatives impeached Trump for a historic second time last month over his role in inciting the deadly storming of Congress by his supporters, and his trial begins Tuesday with the Senate’s 100 members sitting as jurors.

5. Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf

The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government has decided to set up the Land Asset Management Authority in an attempt to retrieve 1,200 acres of land of Pakistan Railways and Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) across the country.

6. CHAGAI:

Iranian authorities have assured Pakistani officials that travel activities would soon be resumed for people living along the border to meet their loved ones.

Assistant Commissioner Asmatullah Khan Achakzai called a meeting at Raahdari Gate in Taftan, a town near Pak-Iran border in Chagai district, and discussed certain border issues with Mohammad Qasim Peeri, the Marzban Grade-2 of Mir Javeh border town of Iran.

7. ISLAMABAD:

Pakistan’s trade deficit swelled 8.27 per cent to $14.96 billion in the first seven months of 2020-21 from $13.82bn over the corresponding period last year, Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) data showed.
